We are pleased to announce the upcoming Historic Preservation Summit sponsored by the Orange County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC).  The Summit will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2012 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the historic Orange County Courthouse in Hillsborough.  A registration and greeting period with refreshments will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the Summit is to build on a previous summit held by the HPC in 2009, and to share and discuss information, ideas, and issues of mutual concern to the Orange County historical community.  Specifically, the Summit will address the following general areas of interest:

  1. Current and proposed rules and regulations regarding preservation in Orange County.
  2. Current projects and program efforts to preserve and protect Orange County’s historic heritage.
  3. Promotion of public interest and involvement in preservation activities.
  4. Educational and instructional means of achieving public awareness of and commitment to the goals of historic preservation.
  5. Areas of joint concern, cooperation, or collaboration among members of the greater historic and environmental community.

This year we are asking for your help in focusing upon the most important issues or topics to be shared by the historical community of Orange County.  To that end, we are setting aside time to hear about special topics (# 5 above) relating to your field of specialty to be shared with all in attendance.  If you have a suggestion for an additional panel or presentation, or you would be willing to host such a session, please contact Rich Shaw at 245-2514, or rshaw@co.orange.nc.us to arrange the details.  Please contact him soon so the agenda can be prepared by April 15.

It is also our intention to formulate action groups from those attending each topic discussion so that continued communication and involvement will be possible after the Summit takes place.

We hope to see you May 3, and thank you in advance for helping to make this a successful event.

Sincerely,

Todd Dickinson, Chair

Orange County Historic Preservation Commission
